It might be an unconventional survival horror game, but it’s still an s/h title at its core.

It’s basically the game that we all wanted Jurassic Park to be with lots of blood and Turok-esque action. Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empireĭino Crisis claws its way into the 55th spot on our best PS1 games list. Still, no task is too great for us here at Retro Dodo. It was soon to be the home of some of the best games ever made, franchises that are still going strong today.įrom a child-friendly dragon to dragon armoured warriors, there are so many exciting titles on this console that I’ve had a sweat on trying to whittle it down to just 50! The PS1 wasn’t just Sony’s answer to Nintendo’s home console devices.

It’s the birthplace of many of today’s most influential video game characters, a groundbreaking console that changed the way we play forever. The PS1 was, and in many ways still is, a pivotal console in the world of gaming. Then I started listing my favourites, and soon I had around 250 titles with more popping into my head every second. 60 of my favourite PlayStation games – easy. I know they're not on the level of Sega Master System boxart (IMO, the gold standard of hideous and lazy, generally), but US Playstation boxart is pretty rubbish when compared to PAL, I agree, to the point that while I totally understand the reasons for using NTSC images for playing on emulators (and I do), I really don't want to use the US cover art, not just because I'm nostalgic for the PAL ones I gamed with as a teenager, but because they're generally just much worse looking. When I sat down to write this list of the best PS1 games of all time, I figured it would be a piece of cake. Suikoden makes me shudder, and as the OP said, so many just look like bad photoshop rush jobs, pasting a CG model against a plain backdrop. but US boxart is almost all quite awful compared to Japanese/PAL boxart!

and while I was still jealous of the games they got and we never did, I was shocked at how ugly overall the US gaming aesthetic was! The US SNES looks like a cheap bland box compared to the Japanese/PAL SNES with it's curves and coloured buttons. However, with the coming of the internet era, I finally got to see what the US had and we missed out on. I was lucky to have a local store that imported SNES games, so at least I got to play Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI! What do you think? Frankly, some NTSC made me laugh when I’ve seen it.Īs a PAL region gamer, I was always jealous and sad that I never got to play games like Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, etc. It seems that the American covers needed to show weapons, pistols, swords, modeled characters or in general some action, while the European ones were much more beautiful, artistic, mysterious, and did not need to be so obvious. And practically all cases, including Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, etc. Same with Dino Crisis and the ridiculous rendering of Regina, vs the logo and the mystery of PAL version.

In the same case we find the goofy cover of Driver, with more crappy 3D and full of action, vs the elegance and design of the European. The clearest example would be, of course, the ridiculous and crappy American covers with 3D characters forming gangs, vs the minimalist and precious covers with the white background and the logo, in Final Fantasy. This has changed now that I have had to spend hours looking for covers for the playstation classic, and I was horrified to see how bad the NTSC copies are. I'm from Spain, so I had never stopped before to think about the covers, taking for granted that the ones I've always seen, the PAL versions, were the only and legitimate ones.
